In a recent report from a Maryland news outlet, the emergence of online sports betting in the state has been a rousing success with little signs of slowing down. Per the Southern Maryland Chronicle, figures for March 2023 in the state suggest a positive outlook for the future of online wagering in Maryland. Moreover, the combined revenues for retail and online sportsbooks for the month created contributions to the state of $5.3 million. This was a record contribution since the unveiling of legal retail sports betting in December 2021 and online sports betting in November of the following year. While the numbers are not yet available for April, much has been written about initial gaming success in Maryland in this space, it would appear the good times will keep rolling on the east coast.

For this article, SBS will be going over the latest gaming news from the Old Line State along with more thoughts about Maryland sports betting.

March revenue numbers were record-breaking in Maryland

Per the report in the Southern Maryland Chronicle, the figure from March “was a significant increase on the $2.7 million return for February.” As evidenced in the article, this is of course a positive indication for the future of online betting in the state. Moreover, the high level of contributions to the state from the sports industry in Maryland is excellent news for an industry that began with the launch of five retail sportsbooks. The gaming returns in Maryland have also been bolstered by the introduction of online sports betting, with seven mobile sportsbooks coming online in November 2022. As of this article’s writing, there are now eight mobile sportsbooks, as well as ten retail betting outlets.

As reported in the same article, the ability to wager on big events, like March Madness, for instance, using mobile betting is great news for the state’s non-profit sector. For example, the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future Fund is supported by the state’s return from betting. As readers of this space are aware, this fund supports public education programs in the state.

Sports betting success unlikely to help online casino bills

According to the report, despite the benefits to the state from its 15% tax returns from sports betting, including online sportsbooks, it “seems unlikely that online casinos will become legal in the state anytime soon.”  On that note, a bill was introduced earlier this year, the “Internet Gaming Authorization and Implementation Act.” This bill asks voters in the state if they want to ballot the expansion of casino gaming online. However, the bill has been stuck with the Maryland Senate Budget and Taxation Committee where it was submitted in January. Since then, it has missed some key points in the legislative process, like “Crossover Day” which is important for passing new bills.

Given the lack of action on the “Internet Gaming Authorization and Implementation Act,” natives of Maryland will be limited to sports betting online for the foreseeable future. The article notes that an increased usage rate among Maryland citizens, the way it is set up now, would lead to an increased benefit to the state. However, it is far from certain whether online casino play will ever be legalized in Maryland in the way that online sports betting has been.
