We’ve seen some huge shocks already at this competition with Denmark, Germany, and Belgium already eliminated. In the case of the Germans, that’s the second World Cup in succession that they haven’t made it out of the group stages, and this after winning the competition in 2014.
So, with some of the so-called lesser nations in the Round of 16, will we see some more shocks? Let’s take a look.
The first match we’re looking at is the Netherlands who take on the USMNT. In fairness to both sides, they’ve already had a taste of knockout soccer, especially Greg Berhalter’s USA team.
In their final group game against Iran, the USA had to win to progress. At the same stage, the Netherlands had to avoid defeat against Qatar in their final match.
The Netherlands are the favorites at -105 on the moneyline with the best World Cup betting sites. USA is +330, and the draw is +230. I can see a tight match here, and it could be one of those games that goes the distance, with maybe even extra-time.
Unfortunately for fans of the USMNT, I think this is the end of the road. I’m going for the Netherlands to qualify for the next round at -220.
Finally, Argentina arrived at this competition with their comprehensive 2-0 win over Poland, a result that should have been far more decisive. They entered this competition 36 games unbeaten, but you wouldn’t have thought it after their opening two performances.
Australia have already overachieved. The Socceroos came second in a group including France and Denmark, and they only finished second to the French on goal difference. They were well beaten by France though, showing their limitations against top quality opposition.
I only see a win for Argentina here. They are -500 on the moneyline, if you think that’s too short, take over 2.5 goals at -135, as Argentina could win by two or three.
The French went into overdrive to beat Australia 4-1 in their opening match, and they had to dig deep to defeat Denmark in their second match. Forget about the loss to Tunisia, Didier Deschamps’ team were already through, and rested a lot of their stars for the 1-0 defeat.
Poland were absolutely awful in their 2-0 defeat to Argentina, where a win would have seen them qualify via their own efforts. Instead they took the defeat and relied on favors. It’s hard to make a case for the Poles on that evidence. It has to be a win for France on the moneyline.
This is the first time these two teams have met. England looked strong winning their group and rightly go into this match as the favorites with top World Cup betting sites.
As for Senegal, they beat Ecuador 2-1 in their final Group A game last Tuesday to qualify. The Senegalese are without Sadio Mane for the whole of this competition, and this is the sort of game they will really miss him in.
England look too strong though, and they have a bench packed with power that can change a game late on. I expect it to be tight, but England should have too much, and are my pick to win on the moneyline.
Both these sides had to get results against tournament favorites to qualify, and both managed it. Japan defeated Spain 2-1 on Thursday, and in the process knocked out Germany.
As for Croatia, they did have to ride their luck at times against Belgium. But in the end they were good for their 0-0 draw, which saw them finish second in Group F.
Japan got to the Round of 16 in 2018, and it was an amazing achievement to do it again. They aren’t the favorites to win this match, but I can see a shock coming somewhere in this round. On the handicap market, Japan has a 0.5 goal start, and taking them to win at -115 for my betting pick with BetOnline.

The Moroccans have already overachieved at this competition, topping Group F ahead of Croatia and Belgium. As for Spain, they never looked like scoring when they desperately needed a goal against Japan on Thursday, and this after putting seven past Costa Rica.
I think Spain has had their shock though, and although Morocco is well capable of getting a result, I have to go for Luis Enrique’s team. They are one of the tournament favorites afterall. Spain to win on the moneyline is my final pick.
