In a recent report from the Dallas Morning News and NBC 5 in DFW, former Lone Star State governor Rick Perry has become the new voice of the Texas Sports Betting Alliance. A Republican, who once fought the legalization of betting, Perry says that betting is already happening in Texas so there should be regulation in the state to make it safer. Per the report, the former governor says that there is a way to regulate and make the act of gambling in the state. In the report, Perry said that “the idea that somehow or another, people are going to stop betting on sports is a bit of a fallacy.” Indeed he also pointed out that millions of dollars of revenue from sports betting can help the state.
In this report from SBS, we will be going over the latest gaming news coming out of the Lone Star State and also some other notes about Texas gambling.
As a veteran of the Texas political arena, Perry is well-aware of what he must do to help the company he is the spokesperson for being successful. In the report, the former Governor pointed out that he is a big fan of the 10th amendment in the state. Perry said that he loves the idea that the Texas House is going to bring the prospect of sports betting forward. However, he did point out that two-thirds of the House group have to agree to pass sports gaming, along with two-thirds of the Senate, before it goes to the people of the state.
As the report pointed out, the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, and FC Dallas are all partners with the Texas Sports Betting Alliance. This does not even include other smaller teams in Texas as well. Moreover, large sports websites like Bet MGM, Draft Kings, Fanduel, and Barstool Sportsbook are big proponents of the Alliance as well.
Per the report, there will of course be opposition to legalized sports gaming in Texas, primarily in Austin where the legislature sits. For readers of this space, this is of course not breaking news when it comes to the battle for gaming legalization in the Lone Star State. For instance, Rob Kohler, the consultant for the Christian Life Commission mentioned in one article that as the father of their boys, there is enough worry about what can happen and what access young adults can be given and find out. Kohler has been lobbying against this type of legislation for years on behalf of the Christian Life Commission per one article. He does not think mobile sports betting has a better chance this year, even with the former governor advocating for it.
Kohler mentioned in the report that, “you do not see folks that were running for the Texas House or the Texas Senate going to the rotary clubs and telling folks, ‘if you elect me I am going to pass sports gambling.’” Indeed with both sides gearing up for another legislative session, this will be a hard-fought battle. The next Texas legislative session begins in January of next year.
