For residents of Texas, the Mega Millions jackpot could be the gateway to a new life in the Lone Star State. Per a recent update article from The Texan, the Texas Lottery Commission is reportedly on track to exceed its all-time sales record in a fiscal year after the Mega Millions jackpot reached a historic $1.3 billion in August. According to the update, through the end of July, the lottery reported over $7 billion in sales, which is a slight increase from the same time last fiscal year. While full sales figures have not been quite reported on the TLC’s website, one could surmise that this lottery will keep breaking records until a winner is crowned

In this article, SBS will go over some of the main key points from the report, some other thoughts and also some other notes about the Texas wagering scene.

Texas Lottery sales have included weeks with over $250M

Per the update from The Texas, these lottery sales numbers include totals for both scratch tickets and draw games as part of the Texas Lottery Commission (TLC) system. According to the Executive Director of the TLC,  Gary Grief, sales for last week’s Mega Millions drawings “catapulted the Texas Lottery to a new all-time record” for total sales in a weekly timespan. In addition to a new weekly record, there was also a positive uptick in sales from the recent estimated Mega Million jackpot ($1.33 billion) and the $100 ticket scratch game ($20 Million Supreme) according to Grief. The executive director also noted, barring any unforeseen circumstances occurring, this will break last year’s Texas Lottery sales total

In the same report from the Texan, the TLC has been on a winning high note since the dark days of the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, in fiscal year 2021, the commission reported its highest sales figures since 1992. Going back to the pandemic, the TLC experienced a precipitous decline during that time when many of the locations where lottery tickets were sold were deemed “essential” under the litany of disaster orders put into place at the time. Since then, the Mega Millions jackpot has rebounded rapidly per all latest reports. Nonetheless, the odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot are 1 in 302.5 million.

Texas benefits from lottery, all other gambling still outlawed

Though the state of Texas does reap the rewards quite nicely from the TLC system, all other variations are gambling are still prohibited by law there. As many regular readers in this space are aware, Texas is one of the last states that has not legalized sports wagering. Proponents of expanding gaming in Texas are seeking constitutional amendments to permit a limited number of casinos and also sports betting as a whole in the massive state. Per the article, many critics fear there will be a negative impact on the state’s economy and an increase in gambling addictions amongst the state’s population base.
