Scheduled to take place later this month and into mid-September the 2022 Vuelta a España is an excellent cycling showcase. This multi-stage bicycle race is part of the UCI World Tour and this will be the 77th edition of the fantastic competition. With the race kicking off in Utrecht and finishing in Madrid, this will be an excellent endurance event for the multiple pro cycling teams taking part. Reigning champion Primož Roglič is not part of this year’s field, so a new champ will be crowned which means an even more wide-open battle. In fact, the top three places will not be taking part in this year’s edition.
For this article, SBS will be going over what to look for from the top favorites, who will win this competition and also some other cycling betting tips.
Favorites to win The 2022 Vuelta a Espana | |
---|---|
Remco Evenepoel | +280 |
Richard Carapaz | +500 |
Jai Hindley | +800 |
Simon Yates | +800 |
Evenepoel enters this competition as the odds-on favorite to finish atop the podium. The 22-year Belgian racer has already won some big events this year with first place finishes at the Liège–Bastogne–Liège and also the Clásica de San Sebastián. He also won the Belgian National Championship time trial earlier in 2022 as well. Certainly a fantastic rising star in the sport, Evenepoel has earned the honor for the pole position.
The 2020 Summer Olympics gold medalist in the road race event, La Locomotora is certainly a tenacious and cunning competitor. Carapaz is also the first cyclist to achieve an Olympic road race gold medal and a podium finish in each of the three Grand Tours. Earlier this year he also won the Ecuadorian National Time Trial Championship. If he is able to win this year’s competition in Spain, it will be his first title at the event after finishing second in 2020.
Winner of the 2022 Giro d’Italia, Hindley made history this year by being the first Australian winner of the event. In addition to his win at the Italian Grand Tour event, he also finished in fifth place at the Tirreno–Adriatico earlier this year. For this year’s competition in Spain, it will be his first time competing in the road race since 2018 when he finished in 32nd place. A rider with a strong climbing style, Hindley is in the prime of his career at just 26 years of age.
The last racer on our list, Yates is no slouch on the professional cycling circuit and is our most tenured competitor on this countdown. Prior to 2022, he has won a couple of major events like the 2018 Vuelta a España. The 30-year old British cyclist has also won multiple stages at each of cycling’s three grand tours. For this year, he has a second place finish at the Paris–Nice competition along with a sixth place showing at the Clásica de San Sebastián.
Prediction: This road racing Grand Tour will go down to the wire, but a hungry and wiley veteran like Carapaz is a great choice to take home the gold medal.
