Played every other year between a team from the United States and an International squad representing the rest of the world, not including Europe the Presidents Cup features some of the best golf action. Held in a match play format, the Presidents Cup is slated for late September at the Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina. Held biennially since 1994, the competition is the second most well-known team golf match played only to the Ryder Cup. This year’s showdown will feature Davis Love III leading Team USA and Trevor Immelman as the captain for the international squad.

For this report, SBS will go over what to look for from each team and also who will be victorious in the 2022 edition of the Presidents Cup.

Men’s golf match play contest team spotlight: United States

Per a report from the official Presidents Cup website, Love announced that Fred Couples and Zach Johnson will join his squad in North Carolina. Later on, Love announced that PGA Tour veterans Steve Stricker and Webb Simpson will round out his squad as his final two assistant captains. The United States team has normally dominated this competition. In the 13 editions of the Presidents Cup, The United States has 11 times with their only loss coming back 1998 in Australia. While they did tie in 2003, the Americans have had some healthy victories in almost every Presidents Cup. Moreover, the United States has never lost on home soil and won by a score of 16-14 in 2019 when the Presidents Cup last took place.

Men’s golf match play contest team spotlight: International

Back in July of this year, Immelman said that his squad would be made up of savvy vets like K.J. Choi, Geoff Ogilvy, Camilo Villegas and Mike Weir. With 30 combined wins between the players on the International team, this is certainly a tough squad of players. Ogilvy, Choi and Weir are tied for most wins on the squad with eight PGA Tour victories apiece. While this is certainly a veteran group, they should not be overlooked given their collective PGA Tour experience. With the 2008 Masters tournament winner Immelman leading the way, this will be a great showdown of golf talent in North Carolina. While there are also still some other players to be determined, this is still a solid roster of athletes to square off against Team USA.

Prediction: The 2022 edition of the Presidents Cup should be closer than in past years given the parity in talent among the squads. With that in mind, look for the United States’ dominance to continue on their home soil
