For racing fans, nothing quite captures the thrill of the Moto2 World Championship. With the season firmly underway, a handful of riders have established themselves as the favorites to win the 2022 world title. Currently tied for the lead in the world standings is Italian Celestino Vietti along with Spaniard Augusto Fernández. Trailing them by a solid margin is another Spanish rider in Arón Canet. With all three riders using Kalex bikes, it remains to be seen who can pull away and win the world championship.
For this article, SBS will go over what each racer brings to the table, who will win the 2022 Moto2 World Championship and also some more notes about betting on MotoGP.
Favorites to Win The 2022 Moto2 World Championship | |
---|---|
Augusto Fernandez | -127 |
Celestino Vietti | +278 |
Aron Canet | +800 |
Coming off back-to-back first place finishes, Fernández has set himself up as the leader at the podium and the front of the back. In addition to his two wins as of late at the Dutch TT and the 2022 German motorcycle Grand Prix, the Spaniard was also able to lock down a victory at the French motorcycle Grand Prix back in May of this year. Certainly someone to keep an eye on this season, the 24-year old is on a blistering pace after finishing in fifth place last year. After winning three races in the previous five seasons, Fernández has already eclipsed that mark in 2022. The question remains though if he can keep up this torrid all the way through November.
The other rider tied for first place in the world standings, Vietti was the previous favorite in the Moto2 World Championship race, but has had some inconsistent results as of late. Earlier this year though, the Italian jumped out as the best rider in the Moto2 field. Thanks to wins at the 2022 Qatar motorcycle Grand Prix and the Argentine Republic motorcycle race (two of the season’s first three races). Vietti was able to catapult to the top of the leaderboard. While he was able to win the Catalan Grand Prix back in June, he has had mixed results in his last two races. Coming off a fourth place mark in the Netherlands, Vietti has to get back to his early season form if he wants to keep his world title hopes alive.
Our final racer spotlight, Canet is currently 30 points behind the leaders in the standings, but has shown he can rack up top-three finishes consistently in the past. The 2019 Moto2 World Championship runner-up, the 22-year old Spanish rider is hungry for his first-ever world title. While he has been unfortunately bogged down at times by dismal performances (he has retired three times in races this season), he has also had some solid outings. For instance, he has notched four second place finishes on the year which is more than any other rider has done. However, if he is to overtake the leaders, then he is going to need to achieve some top of the podium performances.
Prediction: This competition should go down to the wire and be a hard-fought battle between our top two contenders. With that in mind, take the hot hand in Fernández to keep the good times rolling.
