Held at the Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom, the F1 season rolls on to the British Grand Prix where some crucial F1 World Championship points will be up for grabs. The driver in first place in the standings, Max Verstappen, has bolstered his lead with back-to-back wins in the last two races. At the Canadian Grand Prix, Verstappen was able to lengthen his lead over rivals Sergio Pérez (retired) and Charles Leclerc (fifth place). In addition to his dominance at the last two races, Verstappen has won six of the nine races held this season. The only other drivers to notch the top of the podium this season have been Leclerc (twice) and Pérez (one).
For this article, SBS will go over what these drivers bring to the table, along with a dark horse contender, and who will be the winner at the British Grand Prix.
Favorites to Win The 2022 F1 British Grand Prix | |
---|---|
Max Verstappen | -110 |
Charles Leclerc | +225 |
Sergio Perez | +750 |
Carlos Sainz | +1200 |
As referenced above, Verstappen has been on an absolute tear this season. Thanks to his six first-place finishes this year, he has a commanding lead in the F1 World Championship standings at 175 total points. With a 46-point lead over second place Sergio Pérez, Verstappen is setting himself up for another run at a world title. While he has been successful at other courses, a victory at the British Grand Prix has eluded Verstappen. Though he did finish in second place in 2020, he was unable to finish the race at Silverstone in 2021.
After a dazzling start to the season, Leclerc has cooled off quite a bit in recent competitions. In the first three races of the season, the 24-year-old was able to win two of three competitions, briefly holding first place in the championship standings. However, in the last four races, he has retired twice and finished outside the top three twice as well. He has had success in the past at the British Grand Prix though with three top-three finishes in the last four seasons.
Currently, in second place in the F1 World Championship standings, the Mexican driving sensation is aiming for his second victory this season. While he is currently in second place, he only has a three-point lead over Leclerc at 129 total points. Pérez also had a tough time at the Canadian Grand Prix earlier this month when he had to unexpectedly retire during the race. Nonetheless, he is having perhaps his best season to date and is hell-bent on chasing down Verstappen for the lead.
Sainz is the dark horse on this list, but if he has a great qualifying round he has an opportunity to make some serious noise. One of the more consistent drivers this season (three second-place finishes), the 27-year-old Spaniard has found a way to stay near the top of the leaderboard. Though a first-place finish has eluded him this season, perhaps this is the race to turn it around for Sainz. That said, he has not won an F1 race since his debut in 2015, so his winning here would be a big surprise to racing observers.
Prediction: When it comes to F1 racing, there is perhaps no more dominant racer today than Verstappen. Take the phenom to win here and lock up his seventh win of the season.
