SBS: Emmy Awards – Ted Lasso, The Crown Favored To Win Big
All eyes will be on Ted Lasso, The Mandolorian and The Crown on Emmys night. It’s a safe bet that many wagers will be on them as well.
The 73rd annual Primetime Emmy Awards to honor the best in television are slated to be presented on September 19. Among dramas, both The Crown and The Mandolorian garnered an awards-leading 24 nominations. In the comedy genre, it’s Ted Lasso, the quirky show about an American football coach crossing the pond to coach the British version of a football team that’s the runaway favorite to dominate on Emmys night.
Should you play favorites or look for value further down the odds boards? Let’s analyze that in some of the more prominent Emmy Awards categories. All of the best betting sites will offer odds on the 73rd Emmy Awards. Check our handy guides prior to making a wager.
Will there be drama that plays out, or is Prince Charles in charge of the Outstanding Lead Actor in a drama category? Josh O’Connor is the prohibitive odds-on favorite to capture the Emmy here. His portrayal of the socially awkward heir to the British throne in the third season of The Crown was spot on.
It’s a solid group of candidates, though. Billy Porter (Pose) and Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us) and Matthew Rhys (Perry Mason) are all past winners. And don’t count out Rege-Jean Page from the critically-acclaimed Bridgerton.
That being said, O’Connor figures to be tough to beat.
Is there a more lovable character on television today than Ted Lasso? Jason Sudeikis already owns a Golden Globe for his role as the positive-energy exuding fish out of water.
This might be the easiest bet to cash on Emmy night. However, it won’t provide a windfall. Sudeikis as Ted Lasso is an overwhelming -2000 betting choice to win this category.
Emma Corrin stepped into the most daunting role on The Crown and made it her own. The challenge of playing someone as prominently known and universally loved as Diana, Princess of Wales, was no easy task. On top of that, she was also asked at times to display the worst character traits of someone embraced worldwide as the People’s Princess.
Corrin is the -650 betting choice and should win here. It’s never wise to count out her co-star Olivia Colman at awards time, though. However, it must be said that Colman’s delivery as Queen Elizabeth was understated. That was the intention, of course, but will the subtle quality of her work be appreciated by Emmy voters?
Television veteran Jean Smart is a veteran of the Emmys. She’s been nominated nine times, winning on three occasions – twice for Frasier (2000, 2001) and once for Samantha Who? (2008). Oddsmakers believe strongly that she’s about to add another win to that total.
She’s enjoying a career resurgence of late. Smart’s work in Hacks has her listing as the -900 chalk to take home the best actress in a comedy series Emmy. The Flight Attendant’s Kaley Cuoco could provide stiff competition but the Smart money is indeed on Jean.
Historically, some of the greatest comedy series ever made was strengthened by a powerful ensemble cast. Think about Barney Miller in the 1970s and Cheers in the 1980s.
Comedy works best when the characters play off of each other. While filling starring roles on both TV and film, Sudeikis has proven a master at working the room, so to speak, and making all of the characters come to life.
It’s the quality that makes Ted Lasso such an adorable program. That’s why the show is the overwhelming -1500 choice to take home the Emmy as the best comedy series.
Viewers were waiting anxiously Season 4 of The Crown. How would the show deal with the compelling tale of Charles and Diana?
Not only was that storyline well played, the work of Gillian Anderson as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher was spellbinding.
The question is, can Charles and Di deliver for The Crown what this excellent show still lacks to put on the mantle – an Emmy from one of the major categories? A Netflix Series has never earned the Emmy as Best Drama Series. Is this the year they finally breakthrough?
RuPaul’s Drag Race has already threepeated. The show won the Emmy for Outstanding Competition Program in 2018, 2019, and 2020.
The competition that pits some of the world’s most talented drag queens against each other has gained popularity because it also overflows with drama queens.
RuPaul’s Drag Race is like a bag of potato chips. There’s no endearing quality in its consumption – no nutritional value, no compelling reason to sit and take it all in. And yet, just like you can’t put that bag of chips down, you just can’t stop watching the Drag Race.
It truly is all that and a bag of chips.
